Episode Overview

Tremors occur when sections of the Earth's crust grind against each other. The Earth's crust consists of large sections known as tectonic plates that are in constant, albeit slight, motion. Occasionally, these plates do not slide smoothly alongside one another. An earthquake is triggered when they suddenly break free and slip past each other in a rapid, jarring motion. Most seismic activity takes place along the edges of these plates, particularly at the interface of the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. The Pacific Ring of Fire is one of the most seismically active areas, named for the numerous volcanoes that form near these plate boundaries.
