In 1832, Anne Lister arrives back at Shibden Hall from Hastings, heartbroken to learn that her intended partner, the noble Vere Hobart, has agreed to marry a man. While she cares deeply for her aging aunt, Anne feels disheartened by the dilapidated state of her family estate and struggles to cope with her father and her devoted sister, both of whom present their own challenges in her daily life.
