Overview

Maria, a devout and unmarried woman, turns to folk magic and prayers to Saint Djalminha in hopes of finding a husband. Bound by a vow her father made—offering her to the saint in exchange for her survival during a birth that claimed her mother’s life—Maria is now venerated as a miracle worker by pilgrims, yet she longs for an earthly love, one with passion and substance. Desperate for guidance, she pleads for a sign, and a gypsy’s prophecy hints that a stranger from afar will arrive in an artists’ caravan. Unable to bear her loneliness any longer, Maria resolves to chase down her destined love, whatever the cost.
