Overview

Jamie departs the children's home to stay with his father's mother. He spends time laboring in a mine and apprenticing at a tailor's shop before being drafted into the RAF and shipped off to Egypt. There, he meets Robert, whose easy, unassuming friendship frees Jamie from his own self-absorption and offers him a new sense of peace.
