Maria Margarethe Anna Schell (January 15, 1926 – April 26, 2005) was a distinguished Austrian/Swiss actress renowned for her captivating performances in film. Born in Vienna to a Swiss writer and an Austrian actress, she developed a passion for acting early, influenced by her artistic family. Maria was the elder sister of acclaimed actor Maximilian Schell, alongside lesser-known actors Carl and Immy (Immaculata) Schell.
Her most celebrated role came in 1956 when she won the prestigious Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her performance in "Gervaise." This accolade solidified her status as a prominent figure in European cinema. Throughout her career, Schell showcased her versatility and talent in various films across different genres, earning admiration from audiences and critics alike.
After a successful career that spanned several decades, Maria Schell passed away on April 26, 2005, in Preitenegg, Carinthia. Her contributions to film and her remarkable legacy continue to be remembered and celebrated, marking her as a significant figure in the history of cinema.
