Biography

Domingos José Soares de Oliveira (September 28, 1936 – March 23, 2019) was a prominent Brazilian figure celebrated for his contributions as an actor, playwright, stage director, television host, poet, and filmmaker.

Initially pursuing a degree in Engineering, Oliveira soon gravitated towards the theatrical arts, immersing himself in amateur theater before making his mark in cinema, particularly within the influential Brazilian New Wave (Cinema Novo) movement. He began his filmmaking career as an assistant director under Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, contributing to notable short films such as "Manuel Bandeira, o Poeta do Castelo" and "Couro de Gato." His directorial debut came in 1966 with "Todas as Mulheres do Mundo," which marked the beginning of a prolific career.

Over the years, Oliveira penned more than 20 theatrical works, directed 18 films, and hosted three television shows, frequently collaborating with partner Priscilla Rozenbaum. His artistic endeavors often explored themes of love and sexuality, characterized by a blend of humor and intellect, earning him the nickname "the Brazilian Woody Allen."

In his later years, Oliveira faced the challenges of Parkinson's Disease but remained dedicated to his craft until his death in March 2019. His legacy continues to influence Brazilian culture and the arts, reflecting his unique voice and vision.
