Mary Astor (May 3, 1906 - September 25, 1987) was a prominent American actress best known for her iconic portrayal of Brigid O'Shaughnessy in the film noir classic, The Maltese Falcon (1941), alongside Humphrey Bogart. Astor embarked on her film career as a teenager in the silent era of the 1920s, successfully adapting to the transition to sound films. However, her career faced significant challenges in the mid-1930s due to a highly publicized scandal involving a custody battle for her daughter and legal issues with her parents, which threatened to derail her professional life.

Despite these personal hurdles, Astor rebounded with impressive performances and achieved significant acclaim, culminating in an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Sandra Kovak in The Great Lie (1941). Throughout the 1940s, she was a key player at MGM and continued to act in films, television, and stage productions until her retirement in 1964.

In addition to her acting career, Astor was a talented author, penning five novels. Her autobiography gained bestseller status, as did her later work, A Life on Film, which delved into her experiences in Hollywood. Renowned director Lindsay Anderson remarked in 1990 on her lasting impact, noting that her name often arose in conversations about cinema, highlighting her unique ability to infuse depth and authenticity into her roles.
