Biography

Allison Hayes, originally named Mary Jane Hayes, was born in Charleston, West Virginia. She graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School in 1948, where she gained recognition by winning the title of Miss District of Columbia. This accolade propelled her into the spotlight as she represented Washington, D.C. in the 1949 Miss America pageant. Although she did not secure the crown, her participation opened doors in local television, eventually leading her to Hollywood in 1954, where she signed with Universal Pictures under her new stage name, Allison Hayes.

In the early years of her film career, Hayes appeared in several minor roles, but an injury sustained during the filming of SIGN OF THE PAGAN in 1955 prompted her to file a lawsuit against Universal, which ultimately released her from her contract. She soon joined Columbia Pictures, where she featured in films such as COUNT THREE AND PRAY, MOHAWK, and WOLF DOG. However, it was her iconic lead role in the cult classic ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN (1958) that made her a household name, even though it did not lead to a significant boost in her career at the time.

Throughout the 1960s, Hayes maintained a presence in both film and television, including a notable role on the soap opera "General Hospital" and guest appearances on "Perry Mason." Unfortunately, her career took a downturn due to health issues, including a serious case of lead poisoning traced back to a calcium supplement. After a battle with leukemia, Allison Hayes passed away on February 26, 1977, shortly before her 47th birthday. Her advocacy for improved safety standards in nutritional supplements influenced changes in FDA regulations, leaving a lasting legacy beyond her cinematic achievements.
