Irene Papas, born Eirini Lelekou on September 3, 1929, in Greece, was a distinguished actress and singer whose illustrious career spanned over five decades and included more than 70 films. Papas rose to fame internationally through her memorable performances in acclaimed films such as "The Guns of Navarone" (1961), "Zorba the Greek" (1964), and "Z" (1969). Her powerful portrayals in "The Trojan Women" (1971) and "Iphigenia" (1977) solidified her reputation as a formidable actress. She also showcased her talent in the title roles of "Antigone" (1961) and "Electra" (1962), bringing classical Greek literature to life on the screen.
In addition to her acting prowess, Papas possessed a remarkable singing voice, which she showcased in "Songs of Theodorakis," released in 1968. Her contributions to cinema earned her several prestigious accolades, including the Best Actress award at the Berlin International Film Festival for "Antigone" and recognition from the National Board of Review for "The Trojan Women." In 1993, she was honored with the Golden Arrow Award at the Hamptons International Film Festival, followed by the esteemed Golden Lion Award at the Venice Biennale in 2009. Irene Papas passed away on September 14, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of artistic excellence and a profound impact on the world of film.
