James Burke
Biography
James Burke (September 24, 1886 – May 23, 1968) was a prominent American actor known for his work in film and television, born in the vibrant landscape of New York City. He began his acting career on stage around 1912 before making the transition to Hollywood in 1933. Over his extensive career, which spanned from 1932 to 1964, Burke amassed over 200 film credits, often portraying characters in law enforcement roles, frequently with a comedic twist. He is particularly remembered for his portrayal of Sgt. Velie in Columbia's Ellery Queen mystery series during the early 1940s. His filmography includes notable appearances in classics such as The Maltese Falcon, At the Circus, and Lone Star, with a standout performance as the boisterous rancher friend of Charles Ruggles in Ruggles of Red Gap.
In the early 1950s, he gained further recognition through his role alongside Tom Conway in the ABC detective series Inspector Mark Saber – Homicide Detective, which was later revamped and aired on NBC as Saber of London. From 1960 to 1961, Burke showcased his talent as Zeke Bonner in seven episodes of the ABC western series Stagecoach West, sharing the screen with actors like Wayne Rogers and Robert Bray.
Burke's life was tragically cut short due to a heart condition, passing away at the age of eighty-one, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances.
