Biography

Mariko Okada (岡田 茉莉子, Okada Mariko), born on January 11, 1933, is a renowned Japanese actress celebrated for her performances in both stage and film. Throughout her career, she collaborated with prominent directors, including Mikio Naruse, Yasujirō Ozu, and Keisuke Kinoshita. Additionally, Okada was married to the acclaimed film director Yoshishige Yoshida.

Okada's journey in the film industry began at a young age, as she was raised by her late father's sister after the passing of her father, silent film actor Tokihiko Okada (real name Eiichi Takahashi), shortly after her birth. She made her cinematic debut in Mikio Naruse's 1951 film *Dancing Girl*, subsequently reuniting with Naruse for projects like *Husband and Wife*, *Floating Clouds*, and *Nagareru*. Dissatisfied with the roles offered to her at Toho Studios, she left after her contract ended and joined Shochiku, where she found greater creative fulfillment. Her notable works during this period include Ozu's *Late Autumn* and *An Autumn Afternoon*, as well as Kinoshita's *Spring Dreams* and *The Scent of Incense*.

From 1965 to 1971, she featured in all of Yoshida's films, which were characterized by their avant-garde storytelling. In later years, she appeared in films like Juzo Itami's *Tampopo* and Shinji Aoyama's *My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?* (2005), marking her latest film appearance to date. Okada also maintained a prominent presence in theater and television throughout her career.
