Biography

Samuel Shepard Rogers III (November 5, 1943 – July 27, 2017) was a multifaceted American playwright, actor, director, screenwriter, and author whose creative endeavors spanned over fifty years. Throughout his illustrious career, he penned an impressive 58 plays along with various collections of short stories, essays, and memoirs. His outstanding contributions to theater earned him a remarkable ten Obie Awards, marking him as the most celebrated writer and director in this regard. In 1979, Shepard was awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his groundbreaking play, *Buried Child*, which remains a cornerstone of American theater.

In addition to his theatrical achievements, Shepard was recognized for his work in film, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Chuck Yeager in the 1983 film *The Right Stuff*.
