Brandon Hurst
Biography
Brandon Hurst (November 30, 1866 – July 15, 1947) was a prominent English actor known for his work in both theater and film.
In his early years, Hurst pursued philology before venturing into the performing arts in the 1880s. He graced Broadway stages from 1900 until he transitioned into the film industry. One of his most significant theatrical performances came in the 1910 production of *Two Women*.
Hurst made his film debut in 1915 at nearly fifty years old with *Via Wireless*. Throughout his career, he appeared in an impressive 129 films, with his most recognized work taking place during the 1920s when he often portrayed memorable villains. Noteworthy performances include his role as the mocking Sir George Carewe in the 1920 adaptation of *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde*, the nefarious Jehan Frollo in the 1923 version of *The Hunchback of Notre Dame*, cuckolded Alexei Karenin opposite Greta Garbo in the 1927 film *Love*, and the jester Balkiphedro in the 1928 classic *The Man Who Laughs*, all of which are celebrated cinematic achievements of the era.
While many of Hurst's roles in the sound era during the 1920s and 1930s were minor, one of his notable characters was the malevolent Merlin the Magician in Fox's *A Connecticut Yankee* (1931). Hurst continued to act until his passing, with his final film, *Two Guys from Texas*, released posthumously in 1948.
