Lillian Gish
Biography
Lillian Diana Gish (October 14, 1893 – February 27, 1993) was a distinguished American actress known for her extensive work in stage, film, and television, with a career that spanned an impressive 75 years, from 1912 until 1987.
Gish was a leading figure in the film industry during the 1910s and 1920s, particularly recognized for her collaborations with director D.W. Griffith. One of her most notable performances was in Griffith's groundbreaking film, Birth of a Nation (1915). Although her appearances in sound films were less frequent, she delivered memorable performances in significant works such as the controversial western Duel in the Sun (1946) and the unique thriller Night of the Hunter (1955). In addition, she had a substantial television presence from the early 1950s through the 1980s, culminating in her final film role alongside Bette Davis in The Whales of August (1987).
The American Film Institute (AFI) honored Gish by ranking her as the 17th greatest female star in cinema history. In recognition of her remarkable contributions to the film industry, she received an Honorary Academy Award in 1971 and was presented with an AFI Life Achievement Award in 1984, solidifying her legacy as an iconic figure in American cinema.
