Russell Simpson
Biography
Russell McCaskill Simpson (June 17, 1880 – December 12, 1959) was an American character actor whose career spanned nearly 45 years and included appearances in over 500 films. Born in Danville, California, he became renowned for portraying "grizzled old men," characterized by his lanky frame and rustic voice. A prominent figure in the John Ford Stock Company, Simpson secured a place among the notable character actors of his time.
At the age of eighteen, Simpson ventured to Alaska in search of gold before turning his attention to acting. He began studying the craft in Seattle, Washington, and in 1910 married Gertrude Alter from New York City. By 1909, he had transitioned into theater, showcasing his talents in at least two Broadway productions between 1909 and 1912. His film career took off with a small role in Cecil B. DeMille's original 1914 adaptation of The Virginian, where he eventually rose to play the lead villain in the 1923 remake.
Throughout his extensive career, Simpson spent 12 years performing in road shows, stock companies, and on Broadway. Though often cast in supporting roles, he did take on significant parts, such as the grandfather in the 1920 film Out of the Dust. Simpson's legacy is particularly tied to John Ford’s films, with his most memorable role as Pa Joad in The Grapes of Wrath (1940). His final film appearance came in Ford's The Horse Soldiers, and he continued working until his passing in 1959. Additionally, he held the position of president at the Overseas Phonograph Accessories Corporation.
