Jack Carson

Biography

John Elmer "Jack" Carson (October 27, 1910 – January 2, 1963) was a notable Canadian-born actor who made a significant impact on American cinema from the 1930s through the 1950s. Primarily recognized for his roles as a comedic sidekick, Carson showcased his range in dramatic performances, particularly in acclaimed films like *Mildred Pierce* (1945) and *Cat on a Hot Tin Roof* (1958).

Carson's career began with small parts at RKO Radio Pictures, where he appeared in classics such as *Bringing Up Baby* (1938) alongside Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. His breakout role came in *Enemy Agent*, where he played a mock-drunk undercover agent, leading to a contract with Warner Brothers. During his time there, he often starred opposite Dennis Morgan, attempting to rival the popular Bing Crosby and Bob Hope duo.

His portrayal of the scheming Wally Fay in *Mildred Pierce* remains one of his most celebrated performances, alongside Joan Crawford. Carson also received praise for his role as Matt Libby in *A Star is Born* (1954) and played "Gooper" in *Cat on a Hot Tin Roof*.

In addition to his film work, Carson appeared on numerous television shows, including *The Twilight Zone* and *Bonanza*. In recognition of his contributions to the entertainment industry, he was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 and was posthumously inducted into the Wisconsin Performing Artists Hall of Fame in 1983.
