Biography

Ivan F. Simpson (February 8, 1875 – October 12, 1951) was a prominent Scottish actor known for his contributions to both stage and film. Born in Scotland, Simpson relocated to New York City during his youth, where he enjoyed a prolific career on Broadway that spanned four decades, beginning in 1906 and continuing until his passing.

In 1915, Simpson ventured into the world of silent films, gaining recognition for his role as Mister Watkins in the 1923 classic The Green Goddess. He reprised this character in a sound adaptation of the film released seven years later. Additionally, in 1929, he appeared as Hugh Myers alongside his close friend George Arliss in Disraeli, marking the beginning of a successful partnership that led to their collaboration in a total of nine films.

Throughout the 1930s, Simpson became a well-recognized character actor, often taking on supporting and minor roles in a variety of classic films. He typically portrayed a range of characters including servants, as seen in MGM's adaptation of David Copperfield, and figures such as priests, judges, and doctors in various productions. Simpson frequently appeared in films starring Errol Flynn, including The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Prince and the Pauper, and Captain Blood.

Over his career, Ivan F. Simpson appeared in more than 100 Hollywood films, with his final role coming in My Girl Tisa in 1948. He passed away at the age of 76 and was laid to rest in Kensico Cemetery. His daughter, Pamela Simpson, also pursued a career in acting and lived from 1905 to 2002.
