Biography

Rupert Davies (22 May 1916 – 22 November 1976) was a distinguished British actor, best remembered for his portrayal of the iconic character in the BBC's 1960s adaptation of Maigret, based on the literary works of Georges Simenon.

Born in Liverpool, Davies's early years were marked by his service in the British Merchant Navy, followed by a stint as a Sub-Lieutenant Observer in the Fleet Air Arm during World War II. His aircraft was forced to ditch off the Dutch coast in 1940, leading to his capture and internment at the notorious Stalag Luft III POW camp. While imprisoned, he engaged in theatrical performances to uplift the spirits of fellow inmates, igniting his passion for acting.

Upon his release, Davies quickly returned to the stage, debuting in "Back Home," a show featuring ex-POWs at the Stoll Theatre in London. He soon became a familiar face on British television, appearing in series such as Quatermass II, Ivanhoe, Emergency – Ward 10, Danger Man, and Doctor at Large (1971). He also lent his voice to the character Professor Ian McClaine in the Gerry Anderson series Joe 90.

In 1964, he was honored as the first Pipe Smoker of the Year. His film career included notable roles in classics such as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), Witchfinder General (1968), and Waterloo (1970). Rupert Davies passed away from cancer in 1976, leaving behind his wife Jessica and two sons, Timothy and Hogan, and is interred at Pistyll Cemetery in North Wales.
