Biography
Dame Margaret Natalie Smith CH DBE (December 28, 1934 – September 27, 2024) was a distinguished British actress celebrated for her sharp comedic talent and her remarkable contributions to film and theater over an impressive span of seven decades. As one of the UK’s most recognizable and accomplished actresses, Smith garnered a multitude of prestigious awards throughout her career, including two Academy Awards, five BAFTA Awards, four Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award. Additionally, she received nominations for six Laurence Olivier Awards, making her one of the few performers to achieve the coveted Triple Crown of Acting.
Smith's journey in the performing arts began as a student at the Oxford Playhouse in 1952, followed by her professional Broadway debut in New Faces of '56. She became a prominent figure in British theater alongside Judi Dench, performing with esteemed institutions like the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her Broadway accolades include Tony nominations for Noël Coward's Private Lives (1975) and Tom Stoppard's Night and Day (1979), and she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her role in Lettice and Lovage (1990).
She received Academy Awards for her performances in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and California Suite (1978), and was nominated for four other films. Smith is perhaps widely known for her portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter film series (2001–2011). Her role as Violet Crawley in the acclaimed series Downton Abbey (2010–2015) brought her renewed fame and three Primetime Emmy Awards. Throughout her illustrious career, she earned numerous honorary distinctions, including the British Film Institute Fellowship in 1993 and the BAFTA Fellowship in 1996, and was honored with the title of Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990.
