Biography

Ralph Moody (November 5, 1886 – September 6, 1971) was a versatile American actor whose career spanned over five decades, encompassing more than 50 films and over 100 television shows, along with numerous radio performances.

Moody's theatrical journey began with extensive work in stock theater across the United States, where he even led his own theater troupe for a significant portion of his career. In 1939, he transitioned into radio, starting at WIBW in Topeka, Kansas. He later joined WLW radio in Cincinnati, where he became a prominent announcer and performer. His radio credits included regular roles on popular series such as *Gunsmoke*, *The Roy Rogers Show*, *Wild Bill Hickok*, and *X Minus One*. He also portrayed the character Gramps on NBC Radio's *The Trouble with the Truitts*.

At 62, Moody experienced a resurgence in his career, appearing in notable films like *Road to Bali*, *Toward the Unknown*, *The Legend of Tom Dooley*, and *The Story of Ruth*. On television, he was best known for his role as Jay Burrage in *The Rifleman* and made guest appearances in iconic series including *Gunsmoke*, *The Lone Ranger*, *Perry Mason*, and *Bonanza*. He also participated in the original and revival versions of Jack Webb's *Dragnet*, including its final episode in 1970. Throughout his career, Moody often portrayed warm-hearted elderly characters or Native Americans, leaving a lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
