Jean Seberg
Biography
Jean Dorothy Seberg (November 13, 1938 – August 30, 1979) was a prominent American actress whose life was deeply intertwined with France, where she spent much of her adult years. Throughout her career, she starred in a total of 34 films across Hollywood and Europe, showcasing her talent in notable works such as Saint Joan, Bonjour Tristesse, Breathless, Lilith, The Mouse That Roared, Moment to Moment, A Fine Madness, Paint Your Wagon, Airport, Macho Callahan, and Gang War in Naples.
Seberg became a significant figure in the 1960s, not just for her cinematic contributions but also due to her involvement with the Black Panther Party, which placed her squarely in the sights of the FBI's COINTELPRO project. This targeted campaign against her was a direct response to her activism and support for civil rights.
Tragically, Seberg's life ended at the young age of 40 in Paris, where authorities ruled her death as a probable suicide. Following her passing, her second husband, Romain Gary, held a press conference to attribute her mental health decline to the relentless harassment from the FBI. Gary claimed that false media reports, particularly one suggesting that Seberg was pregnant by a member of the Black Panthers, severely impacted her psyche, leading her to multiple suicide attempts, especially around the anniversary of the child's death on August 25.
