Kay Walsh
Biography
Kay Walsh, born Kathleen Walsh on November 15, 1911, in Chelsea, London, was a distinguished English actress and dancer whose career spanned several decades. Raised in Pimlico by her grandmother, Walsh began her artistic journey as a dancer in the vibrant West End music halls. She made her film debut with a minor role in *How's Chances?* (1934) and quickly followed up with a more significant part in *Get Your Man* (1934), subsequently participating in numerous "quota quickies" during the 1930s.
It was during the production of *Secret of Stamboul* in 1936 that she met David Lean, a budding film editor, with whom she began a romantic relationship that led to their marriage on November 23, 1940. Walsh transitioned to more prestigious projects, appearing in Lean's adaptations of Noel Coward's works, *In Which We Serve* (1942) and *This Happy Breed* (1944). She played a pivotal role in the writing of various screenplays, notably contributing dialogue to the 1938 film *Pygmalion* and creating the closing sequence for Lean's *Great Expectations* (1946), for which she received credit.
Her post-marriage career flourished, with notable performances in Alfred Hitchcock's films and in Ronald Neame's *The Horse's Mouth* (1958), where she portrayed the character Miss D. Coker, a role she cherished. Walsh also appeared on the 1979 television series *Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson*. After retiring in 1981 following her role in *Night Crossing*, she lived quietly in London until her passing on April 16, 2005, at the age of 93, due to injuries from an accident. Walsh's legacy is marked by her dynamic contributions to film and theatre, as well as her familial ties, including her marriage to psychologist Elliott Jaques and their adopted daughter, Gemma.
