Henry Darrow

Biography

Henry Darrow (September 15, 1933 - March 14, 2021) was a distinguished Nuyorican actor celebrated for his dynamic performances in both film and television. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Manolito "Mano" Montoya on the iconic 1960s western series, The High Chaparral, which ran on NBC for four seasons from 1967 to 1971. His compelling performance not only endeared him to audiences but also established him as a prominent figure in television alongside co-star Cameron Mitchell.

Darrow's journey to fame began with his impactful role in the play The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit, which caught the attention of television producer David Dortort, leading to his casting in The High Chaparral. In 1972, he demonstrated his commitment to advocating for diversity in the entertainment industry by co-founding the Screen Actors Guild Ethnic Minority Committee with notable peers, including Ricardo Montalbán and Edith Diaz.

His versatility shone through in various adaptations of the Zorro legend; he lent his voice to the titular character in the 1981 animated series The New Adventures of Zorro, played Zorro Sr. in the 1983 series Zorro and Son, and took over the role of Zorro's father in The New Zorro from 1990 to 1994. Additionally, Darrow made a memorable impression as detective Manny Quinlan in the first season of Harry O (1974-75). Over a career that spanned more than fifty years, he enriched countless television shows and films with his talent.
