Danny Denzongpa
Biography
Danny Denzongpa, whose full name is Tshering Phintso Denzongpa, was born on February 25, 1948, and is a prominent Indian actor of Sikkimese heritage recognized for his work in Bollywood.
Originating from Sikkim, previously an independent Bhutia monarchy, Denzongpa belongs to the Bhutia ethnic group and is fluent in the Bhutia language, which is his mother tongue.
He began his artistic journey by performing both Indian and Nepali songs, as well as acting in films from both industries. One of his popular Nepali songs, "Kaanchi lai ghumaune Kathmandu Sahara," continues to resonate with audiences even two decades later. Over his career, he has appeared in numerous Hindi films, including notable titles like "Asoka" and "16 December." He also gained international recognition for his role alongside Brad Pitt in the film "Seven Years in Tibet." In 2003, he received the Padma Shree, one of India’s highest civilian honors, celebrating his contributions to cinema. Denzongpa is particularly acclaimed for his portrayals of villains and complex characters.
In addition to his acting career, he ventured into the brewing industry in 1982. His company, Yuksom Breweries, which operates three breweries in Sikkim, Orissa, and Assam, produces over three million cases of beer annually. In 2009, Denzongpa's company acquired Rhino Breweries in Assam to counter the expansion of industry leader United Breweries in the North East market.
