Biography
Vittorio Gassman, born Gassmann on September 1, 1922, and widely celebrated as Il Mattatore, was a distinguished Italian actor, director, and screenwriter whose legacy endures in the world of cinema and theatre. His career is marked by an impressive range of performances, blending significant artistic endeavors with numerous entertaining roles.
Gassman's theatrical journey began in 1942 in Milan, where he debuted alongside Alda Borelli in the play "La Nemica." He later relocated to Rome, performing at the Teatro Eliseo with notable actors such as Tino Carraro and Ernesto Calindri, exploring genres from bourgeois comedy to intellectual theatre. In 1946, he made his film debut in "Preludio d'amore," quickly establishing a prolific film career that saw him appear in five movies by the following year, including the acclaimed "Riso amaro" in 1948.
His collaboration with Luchino Visconti marked a turning point, leading to celebrated performances in plays such as "A Streetcar Named Desire" and Shakespeare's "As You Like It." He co-founded the Teatro d'Arte Italiano in 1952, premiering significant works like Hamlet in Italy.
Gassman also ventured into Hollywood, marrying American actress Shelley Winters. With his charm and English proficiency, he starred in films like "Rhapsody" and "The Glass Wall." On June 29, 2000, Gassman passed away at 77 from a heart attack in Rome, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy. His final resting place is at Campo Verano.
