Patric Knowles
Biography
Patric Knowles, born Reginald Lawrence Knowles on November 11, 1911, in England, was a distinguished film actor whose career spanned from the 1930s to the 1970s. He adopted the stage name Patric Knowles to honor his Irish heritage and made his cinematic debut in 1933, quickly establishing himself as a leading man in numerous films.
Knowles’ first foray into American cinema came with the 1936 film *Give Me Your Heart*, known in the UK as *Sweet Aloes*, where he portrayed a wealthy English gentleman. His career flourished after he starred alongside Errol Flynn in *The Charge of the Light Brigade* (1936), where he played Capt. Perry Vickers, the brother of Flynn's character. This collaboration led to recurring roles, including his memorable portrayal of Will Scarlet in the classic *The Adventures of Robin Hood* (1938) and appearances in *Four's A Crowd* (1938).
During World War II, Knowles served as a flying instructor in the RCAF and later defended Flynn’s legacy against accusations of fascism in his written work, *Rebuttal for a Friend*. Over his extensive career, he appeared in notable horror films like *The Wolf Man* (1941) and *Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman* (1943), as well as comedies such as *Abbott and Costello's Who Done It?* (1942).
In recognition of his contributions to film, Knowles received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He also authored a novel titled *Even Steven* (1960). Knowles passed away on December 23, 1995, leaving behind a rich legacy in the film industry.
