Betty Grable
Biography
Betty Grable (December 18, 1916 – July 2, 1973) was a multifaceted American talent known for her remarkable contributions as an actress, pin-up icon, dancer, model, and singer. Her journey in the entertainment industry began early; at just three years old, she was enrolled in Clark's Dancing School. By the age of 13, Grable and her mother moved to Hollywood, where she began appearing in minor film roles, including appearances in productions like Whoopee! and Happy Days.
In 1932, she signed with RKO Radio Pictures, but it wasn't until she starred in By Your Leave and later in College Swing that her career truly began to flourish. Grable's breakout role as Glenda Crawford in Down Argentine Way captured the public's attention and solidified her status as a leading actress. Throughout the 1940s, she starred in a series of successful comedies and musicals, including Coney Island and Sweet Rosie O'Grady. Her famous pin-up pose became a symbol of wartime nostalgia, making her the highest-paid female star in Hollywood by 1947, with 20th Century-Fox even insuring her legs for a staggering million dollars.
Though her popularity waned in the mid-1950s as the musical genre declined, Grable's final film, How to Be Very, Very Popular, showcased her enduring appeal. Following her film career, she shifted her focus to Broadway and nightclub performances. Grable's personal life included two marriages, first to actor Jackie Coogan and later to musician Harry James. She passed away from lung cancer at the age of 56 on July 2, 1973.
