Biography

Clarence LeRoy "Lee" Van Cleef Jr. (January 9, 1925 – December 16, 1989) was a prominent American actor celebrated for his memorable performances in Spaghetti Westerns, particularly in iconic films such as For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. With his distinctive, chiseled features and captivating gaze, Van Cleef initially faced challenges in his career. When he debuted in the classic film High Noon, he chose to keep his nose as is, leading to a minor, non-speaking role as a villain.

For much of the 1950s, he found himself typecast as a secondary antagonist, his intimidating appearance often overshadowing his considerable talent. However, a pivotal moment arrived after a serious car accident, which reignited his passion for acting. Sergio Leone's casting of him in For a Few Dollars More transformed his career, propelling him to international fame and making him a sought-after star in Europe.

Despite battling heart disease in the late 1970s and undergoing pacemaker surgery in the early 1980s, Van Cleef remained active in the film industry until his passing on December 16, 1989, at the age of 64. He was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Hollywood Hills, California, with a gravestone that aptly reflected his legacy as a master of villainy: "BEST OF THE BAD."
