Ernest Borgnine, originally named Ermes Effron Borgnino, was born on January 24, 1917, and passed away on July 8, 2012. Renowned for his distinctive gruff voice and iconic gap-toothed smile, Borgnine enjoyed an illustrious acting career that spanned more than sixty years. He became a beloved figure not only for his film roles but also for his frequent appearances on talk shows and as a game show panelist.
Borgnine's cinematic journey kicked off in 1951, with notable supporting performances in films such as China Corsair and From Here to Eternity. His talent shone brightly in leading roles, culminating in an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal in Marty (1955). He gained widespread recognition for his role as the titular character in the sitcom McHale's Navy, which aired from 1962 to 1966. In the 1980s, he co-starred as Dominic Santini in the action series Airwolf, showcasing his versatility across genres.
Remarkably, Borgnine continued to impress audiences well into his later years, earning a third Primetime Emmy Award nomination at the age of 92 for the 2009 series finale of ER. He was also celebrated as the original voice of Mermaid Man on SpongeBob SquarePants from 1999 until his death.
