Retta
Biography
Marietta Sirleaf, widely known as Retta, is a prominent American stand-up comedian and actress celebrated for her role as Donna Meagle on the hit NBC series Parks and Recreation. Born in New Jersey, she graduated from Duke University in North Carolina before embarking on a career in pharmaceutical research. However, her passion for comedy led her to Los Angeles, where she sought to establish herself in the entertainment industry.
Retta began her stand-up journey in 1996, and by 1998, she was actively touring the college circuit, earning her first paychecks as a comedian. Initially, she experienced significant anxiety before performing, but as she gained experience, that nervousness subsided. Her comedic style often features humor drawn from her everyday life, family, and friends, with a candid approach to topics such as obesity.
In addition to her television success, Retta has showcased her stand-up prowess on platforms like Comedy Central's Premium Blend. Despite her love for comedy, she has expressed a desire to transition to a full-time acting career, stating, “I'm not married to stand-up... it can be very lonely with all the traveling.” Retta continues to be a respected figure in comedy and acting, with a talent for connecting with audiences through her relatable storytelling and humor.
