Biography

James Cossins (4 December 1933 – 12 February 1997) was a distinguished English actor, renowned for his memorable roles in British television and theatre. Hailing from Beckenham, Kent, he gained prominence for his portrayal of the flustered Mr. Walt in the iconic Fawlty Towers episode "The Hotel Inspectors" and as Mr. Watson, the exasperated instructor in Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.

Educated at the City of London School, Cossins served in the Royal Air Force before honing his craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he achieved the notable distinction of winning the silver medal in 1952. His career began in repertory theatre and at the Nottingham Playhouse, where he showcased his talent for playing a variety of pompous and cantankerous characters.

Cossins made a significant mark on the stage, appearing in productions such as Charley's Aunt at the Apollo Theatre in 1971 alongside celebrated actors like Tom Courtenay. His film credits include over forty productions, notably The Anniversary and The Lost Continent (both 1968), Gandhi (1982), and The Man with the Golden Gun (1974).

On television, he featured in numerous beloved series, including The Likely Lads, Minder, and All Creatures Great and Small. He also enjoyed a recurring role as Bruce Westrop in Emmerdale Farm. Despite health challenges in his later years, Cossins left behind a rich legacy in the performing arts before passing away from heart disease at the age of 63.
