Biography

Frieda Inescort, originally named Frieda Wrightman, was born on June 29, 1901, in Scotland and became a prominent actress known for her captivating performances on stage and screen. She gained significant acclaim for her portrayal of Sorel Bliss in Noël Coward's celebrated Broadway play Hay Fever. Another notable role was that of the shingled lady in the 1927 production of Escape by John Galsworthy.

Inescort's theatrical journey began with her debut in The Truth About Blayds in 1922 at the Booth Theatre on Broadway. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, she graced the stage in numerous productions, including You and I, The Woman on the Jury, and Trelawny of the "Wells." Her extensive Broadway career also comprised roles in plays such as When Ladies Meet, False Dreams, and You Never Can Tell.

Adopting her mother's surname for her professional identity, Inescort transitioned to Hollywood, making her film debut in The Dark Angel in 1935. Her filmography features significant works, including Mary of Scotland, The Letter, and A Place in the Sun. She notably portrayed the scheming Caroline Bingley in the 1940 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice alongside Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson. In later years, she made an appearance in the television series Perry Mason as Hope Quentin in the 1961 episode "The Case of the Jealous Journalist." Frieda Inescort passed away on February 26, 1976, leaving behind a rich legacy in the performing arts.
