Biography

Ed Bishop, born George Victor Bishop on June 11, 1932, in the United States, was a distinguished actor whose career spanned film, television, and radio until his passing on June 8, 2005. He is perhaps best remembered for his role as Commander Ed Straker in the cult classic series *UFO* (1970-71), where he portrayed the leader of a secret military organization defending Earth from extraterrestrial threats. Bishop also lent his voice to Captain Blue in Gerry Anderson's innovative *Supermarionation* series, *Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons* (1967).

Bishop made his film debut in Stanley Kubrick's controversial *Lolita* (1962), and he showcased his versatility in various projects, including *The Mouse on the Moon* (1963) and *2001: A Space Odyssey* (1968), where he played the now-iconic role of the Captain of the Aries 1B Moon shuttle, despite his dialogue being cut from the final edit. He had brief appearances in two James Bond films, *You Only Live Twice* (1967) and *Diamonds Are Forever* (1971), although he went uncredited.

Throughout his career, Bishop appeared in notable films such as *Twilight's Last Gleaming*, *Saturn 3*, and *The Lords of Discipline*. He also contributed to the animated *Star Trek* series in 1974 and was featured in the British drama *Colditz*. A familiar face at science fiction conventions, Bishop often collaborated with fellow actors like Shane Rimmer. They humorously dubbed themselves "Rent-a-yank" due to their frequent partnerships in various projects. Bishop's legacy endures through his memorable performances and contributions to the genre.
