Biography

Donald Patrick "Don" Murray (July 31, 1929 - February 2, 2024) was a distinguished American actor whose career spanned several decades across both film and television. Born in Hollywood, California, he graduated from East Rockaway High School in New York in 1947, where he excelled in football and track, participated in student government, and sang in the glee club while also being active in the Omega Gamma Delta Fraternity. He further honed his skills at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Murray gained prominence for his role as Sid Fairgate on the popular soap opera *Knots Landing*, which he portrayed from 1979 to 1981. His film career was highlighted by an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in *Bus Stop* (1956), alongside Marilyn Monroe. He starred as a blackmailed senator in *Advise & Consent* (1961) and shared the screen with Steve McQueen in *Baby the Rain Must Fall* (1965). Murray also played Governor Breck in *Conquest of the Planet of the Apes* (1972).

Beyond acting, he directed the film adaptation of *The Cross and the Switchblade* (1970) and contributed scripts to *Knots Landing*. He was part of the groundbreaking series *The Outcasts* (1968-69), featuring an interracial bounty hunter duo in the post-Civil War era. After departing *Knots Landing*, his character's dramatic death in the third season was noteworthy. Murray was previously married to actress Hope Lange and was the father of actor Christopher Murray. His legacy endures both through his extensive body of work and his contributions to the American entertainment landscape.
