Biography

Jonathan Kimble Simmons, born on January 9, 1955, is a celebrated American actor recognized as one of the finest character actors of his generation. Since his acting career began in 1986, he has amassed a remarkable portfolio, featuring over 200 roles in both film and television. His extensive body of work has earned him prestigious accolades, including an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Critics’ Choice Award, among others.

In film, Simmons is perhaps best known for his portrayal of J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007). He has also delivered standout performances as B.R. in Thank You for Smoking (2005), Mac MacGuff in Juno (2007), and the intense music teacher Terence Fletcher in Whiplash (2014). His roles extend to Bill in La La Land (2016), William Frawley in Being the Ricardos (2021), and Commissioner James Gordon in multiple DC Extended Universe films.

On the television front, Simmons gained recognition for his roles as Dr. Emil Skoda in Law & Order, Vernon Schillinger in Oz, and Will Pope in The Closer. From 2017 to 2019, he starred in the Starz series Counterpart and has been featured in commercials for Farmers Insurance, along with appearing in the IFC series Brockmire.

As a voice actor, he is well-known for his roles in various animated projects, including Cave Johnson in Portal 2, Tenzin in The Legend of Korra, and Nolan "Omni-Man" Grayson in Invincible. Simmons has also voiced the Yellow M&M since 1996.
