Donald Cook
Biography
Donald Cook (September 26, 1901 – October 1, 1961) was a prominent American actor known for his work in both stage and film. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Cook initially pursued studies in agriculture before venturing into the lumber industry. His passion for performing arts blossomed when he became involved with the Kansas Community Players, which ultimately led to his first opportunities in theater.
Cook began his film career with short films, and he gained significant recognition for his role as Mike Powers in the classic crime drama, The Public Enemy. He was also one of the early actors to bring the character of Ellery Queen to life in The Spanish Cape Mystery. His impressive filmography includes notable performances in the 1936 adaptation of Show Boat alongside Helen Morgan, and as a suspect in the Philo Vance mystery, The Casino Murder Case. Additionally, he portrayed a heroic immigration inspector in Ellis Island and appeared in films like The Man Who Played God, Our Very Own, and The Penguin Pool Murder (1932).
Making his Broadway debut in 1926 under the name Donn Cook, he enjoyed a flourishing theatrical career that spanned until 1959, highlighted by a revival of Private Lives in 1948. Cook was married to Princess Gioia Tasca di Cuto from 1937 until his passing from a heart attack in New Haven in 1961.
