Liza Minnelli
Biography
Liza May Minnelli, born on March 12, 1946, is an iconic American performer celebrated for her exceptional talents as an actress, singer, dancer, and choreographer. Renowned for her electrifying stage presence and distinctive alto voice, Minnelli is one of the select few to achieve the prestigious EGOT status, having won an Emmy, Grammy (including the Grammy Legend Award), Oscar, and Tony. She is also honored as a Knight of the French Legion of Honour.
The daughter of legendary actress and singer Judy Garland and acclaimed director Vincente Minnelli, Liza grew up in Los Angeles and Scarsdale, New York, before moving to New York City in 1961 to pursue a career in musical theatre. Her professional debut occurred in the 1963 Off-Broadway revival of "Best Foot Forward." She garnered her first Tony Award in 1965 for "Flora the Red Menace," marking the beginning of her fruitful collaboration with songwriting duo John Kander and Fred Ebb. Their partnership produced signature performances of resilience, including "New York, New York," "Cabaret," and "Maybe This Time," solidifying her status as a beloved gay icon.
Minnelli's film career took flight with her acclaimed role in "The Sterile Cuckoo" (1969), leading to her Oscar win for "Cabaret" (1972), which catapulted her to global fame. While many subsequent films, such as "Lucky Lady" (1975) and "New York, New York" (1977), garnered mixed success, her role in "Arthur" (1981) was both a box office triumph and a Golden Globe nominee. Minnelli's Broadway return included notable productions like "The Act" (1977) and "Liza's at The Palace..." (2008). Since the late 1970s, she has been a prominent figure in concert performances, with memorable shows at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music
