Biography
Griff Rhys Jones is a distinguished Welsh actor and author, born in 1953 in Cardiff, Wales. His family relocated to Essex, England, during his childhood. He received his education at Brentwood School in Essex, where he demonstrated academic prowess, eventually earning an exhibition to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Initially studying History, he later shifted his focus to English literature.
At Cambridge, Griff became an active member of the Footlights Club, where he made significant contributions to the theatrical community, ultimately serving as vice president in 1976. His career gained momentum in the 1980s when he co-created and starred in the acclaimed BBC sketch show "Alas Smith and Jones," alongside his longtime collaborator Mel Smith. This program not only showcased his comedic talents but also solidified his status in British television.
In addition to his television work, Jones has enjoyed a successful career in theatre and film, with notable appearances in productions such as "The Last Goon Show of All" and "The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard."
