Éric Cantona
Biography
Éric Daniel Pierre Cantona, born on May 24, 1966, is a celebrated French actor and former professional football player. His football journey saw him play for several clubs, including Auxerre, Martigues, Marseille, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Nîmes, and Leeds United. However, he is best known for his time at Manchester United, where he made a significant impact, winning four Premier League titles and securing two League and FA Cup Doubles in just five years.
Cantona is often credited with revitalizing Manchester United as a dominant force in football and has attained legendary status among fans. He donned the iconic number 7 jersey, a number previously worn by football greats like George Best, Bryan Robson, and later by stars such as David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. Affectionately referred to as "King Eric" by Manchester United supporters, he was also named the club's greatest player by Inside United magazine. Despite his on-field success, Cantona's career was marred by disciplinary issues, including a notable conviction for assaulting a fan in 1995.
After hanging up his boots, Cantona transitioned into acting, featuring in the 1998 film "Elizabeth," alongside Cate Blanchett, and the 2009 production "Looking for Eric." In 2010, he made his stage debut in the French play "Face au paradis," directed by his wife, Rachida Brakni. Later, on January 19, 2011, Cantona took on a new role as Director of Soccer for the revived New York Cosmos.
