Biography

Abigail, a prominent figure in Australian television, rose to fame as the quintessential blonde bombshell Bev Houghton in the groundbreaking series Number 96, which debuted in 1972. Born in England and educated in France, Abigail's diverse heritage includes a Ceylonese mother of Dutch Burgher descent. She made her way to Australia in 1971, where she first captivated audiences in the lead role of "There's a Girl in My Soup" in Perth.

Her star began to shine brightly after she appeared in a memorable commercial that showcased her Marilyn Monroe-esque charm alongside Phil Silvers. However, it was her portrayal of the innocent Bev that catapulted her into the limelight. As an original cast member, she became one of the series' most beloved characters, yet her dissatisfaction with the repetitive storylines, which often placed her character in compromising situations, led to her abrupt departure in June 1973, making her the only major cast member absent from the 1974 film adaptation.

Following her exit, Abigail struggled to secure substantial roles, often relegated to minor parts in sex comedies of the mid-'70s. She later took on various stage roles and appeared as a French teacher in Class of '74 and a secretary in The Young Doctors. In 1976, she briefly returned to Number 96, introducing a new character, Eve, although a planned spin-off never materialized.

After a hiatus, she revitalized her career as the comedic Caroline Morrell in the soap opera Sons and Daughters from 1982 to 1987, helping to sustain the show's popularity. Abigail also made guest appearances on Neighbours and joined the cast of Chances in 1991, where she portrayed Bambi Chute, a character reminiscent of her earlier roles. Eventually, she retired from acting and settled on a banana plantation in Queensland, voicing her concerns about the increasingly explicit content of later television productions.
