Guy Madison
Biography
Guy Madison, born on January 19, 1922, in Pumpkin Center, California, emerged as a prominent American screen idol and television star, capturing the hearts of the Baby Boom generation. Before entering the entertainment industry, Madison worked as a telephone lineman and served in the Coast Guard during World War II. His journey into acting began unexpectedly when he attended a Lux Radio Theatre broadcast in Hollywood while on leave. There, he was noticed by an assistant to renowned producer Henry Willson, who was seeking a fresh face for the film Since You Went Away (1944). After signing him, they created the stage name Guy Madison, a nod to his appealing persona.
Madison's brief appearance in the film garnered significant attention, leading to a surge of fan mail for the handsome sailor he portrayed. As he honed his craft through theater, he secured leading roles in various films, eventually landing the iconic role of Wild Bill Hickok in the television series Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok (1951). He portrayed this legendary figure across both TV and radio for much of the 1950s, with many episodes later compiled into feature films.
After the series concluded, Madison faced challenges finding work in the U.S., prompting a move to Europe where he found success in Italian westerns and German action films. In the 1970s, he returned stateside, primarily taking on cameo roles. Despite health issues later in life, Madison's legacy endures. He passed away from emphysema on February 6, 1996, in Palm Springs, California. Madison was briefly married to actress Gail Russell.
