Jean Stapleton

Biography

Jean Stapleton, born Jeanne Murray on January 19, 1923, in Manhattan, New York City, was the daughter of Marie A. Stapleton, an accomplished opera singer, and Joseph Edward Murray, who worked as a billboard advertising salesman. With Irish roots from her paternal grandparents, Jean was also related to actress Betty Jane Watson. The performing arts ran in her family; her uncle Joseph E. Deming was a vaudevillian, and her brother Jack Stapleton pursued a career as a stage actor.

After graduating from Wadleigh High School in 1939, she attended Hunter College before venturing into the world of acting. Jean made her stage debut at the Greenwood Playhouse in Peaks Island, Maine, during the summer of 1941, with her New York stage debut following in 1948 with "The Corn Is Green." Her Broadway career flourished with notable performances in the musicals "Damn Yankees" (1955) and "Bells Are Ringing" (1956), both of which she reprised in their film adaptations. Stapleton was also part of the original casts of "Rhinoceros" (1961) and "Funny Girl" (1964). In a noteworthy revival, she played the role of Abby Brewster in "Arsenic and Old Lace" from 1986 to 1987, showcasing her enduring talent and versatility in theater.
