Biography

Arthur Edward Spence Hill (August 1, 1922 – October 22, 2006) was a distinguished Canadian actor celebrated for his impactful contributions to both British and American theater, film, and television. Hailing from Melfort, Saskatchewan, Hill's journey began at the University of British Columbia, where he initially pursued a law degree before his passion for acting took center stage. His formal training continued in Seattle, Washington, and during World War II, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Hill made a noteworthy entrance into Broadway in 1957, playing Cornelius Hackl in the revival of Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker. His acclaimed portrayal of George in Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? earned him a Tony Award for Best Dramatic Actor in 1963, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in theater. Other significant Broadway performances included roles in Look Homeward, Angel, The Gang's All Here, and More Stately Mansions.

In film, Hill is perhaps best remembered for his role as Dr. Jeremy Stone in the 1971 adaptation of Michael Crichton's The Andromeda Strain, alongside notable performances in Harper, The Chairman, and A Little Romance. His television career featured the titular role in the series Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law from 1971 to 1974, and guest appearances on popular shows like Murder, She Wrote.

Arthur Hill's legacy endures even after his passing at 84, following a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's disease, as he remains a respected figure in the performing arts.
