Teri Garr
Biography
Teri Ann Garr (December 11, 1944 – October 29, 2024) was a celebrated American actress, dancer, and singer best known for her comedic performances throughout a prolific career spanning over four decades and comprising more than 140 film and television credits. Her impressive body of work earned her an Academy Award nomination, a BAFTA nomination, and a National Board of Review Award.
Born in Lakewood, Ohio, and raised in North Hollywood, Garr came from a family steeped in entertainment; her father was a comedic actor, and her mother worked as a studio costumer. She honed her dancing skills in ballet and various styles during her childhood. Garr began her career in the early 1960s, appearing in minor roles and as a dancer in several Elvis Presley musicals. After a brief stint in college, she pursued acting at the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York City.
Garr's career took off with a notable role in the "Star Trek" episode "Assignment: Earth." Her film breakthrough came with her memorable performance as Inga in Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein" (1974) and a significant role in Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977). She gained further acclaim for her role as Sandra Lester in "Tootsie" (1982), earning an Academy Award nomination.
A strong presence on late-night television, Garr also appeared in Robert Altman's films, including "The Player" (1992) and "Prêt-à-Porter" (1994). In the 1990s, she portrayed Phoebe Abbott on "Friends" (1997–98). In 2002, she revealed her battle with multiple sclerosis, which had begun to affect her work in the 1990s. Tragically, Garr passed away on October 29, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and talent.
