Dick Elliott
Biography
Richard "Dick" Elliott (April 30, 1886 – December 22, 1961) was a notable American character actor recognized for his extensive work in the film industry, with appearances in more than 240 films spanning from the 1930s until his passing.
Born Richard Damon Elliott in Boston, Massachusetts, he became well-known for portraying a variety of characters, often embodying a slightly overbearing personality, particularly in roles such as politicians. Elliott, who was short and stout, famously took on the role of Santa Claus in various television programs, including those featuring Jimmy Durante, Red Skelton, and Jack Benny. One of his standout moments came in the classic film It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), where he humorously advised James Stewart's character to stop hesitating and "just go ahead and kiss her" while trying to bid goodnight to Donna Reed's character.
Elliott had a recurring presence on television, including multiple memorable roles in the Adventures of Superman series. He made three appearances as Stanley on CBS's December Bride, and featured in two western series from ABC/Warner Brothers, Sugarfoot and Maverick. Additionally, he played the prospector Peter Cooper and Sheriff Tiny Morris in CBS’s Tales of the Texas Rangers, and appeared twice as Doc Thornton on ABC's The Real McCoys. Perhaps most famously, he portrayed Mayor Pike in early episodes of CBS's The Andy Griffith Show, where actress Josie Lloyd played his daughter in two of those episodes. Elliott passed away due to heart complications on December 22, 1961.
