Biography
Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. (born December 28, 1954) is a celebrated American actor, producer, and director, acclaimed for his powerful performances across theater and film. Often hailed as one of the greatest actors of his generation, The New York Times named him the greatest actor of the 21st century in 2020. Throughout his impressive career, Washington has garnered numerous honors, including two Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Tony Award. He has also received nominations for two Emmy Awards and a Grammy Award, alongside prestigious recognitions such as the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2016, the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2019, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022.
Washington’s journey began at the American Conservatory Theatre, where he honed his craft before making his mark in off-Broadway productions. His breakout role came in the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere (1982–1988) and the film A Soldier's Story (1984). He won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the Civil War drama Glory (1989) and his second for Best Actor in the crime thriller Training Day (2001). His other notable film credits include Mo' Better Blues (1990), Philadelphia (1993), and The Equalizer trilogy (2014–2023).
In addition to his film work, Washington has excelled on stage, with a noteworthy Broadway debut in Checkmates (1988) and a Tony Award win for Fences (2010). His theatrical repertoire includes acclaimed performances in Coriolanus, Julius Caesar, and A Raisin in the Sun.
