Regis Toomey
Biography
John Regis Toomey (August 13, 1898 – October 12, 1991) was a prominent American actor recognized for his contributions to both film and television. Hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Francis X. and Mary Ellen Toomey and grew up as one of four siblings. Toomey attended Peabody High School and initially considered a career in law; however, his passion for the performing arts prevailed, leading him to become a musical theater performer.
He honed his dramatic skills at the University of Pittsburgh, where he became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Toomey started his career in stock theater before making his way to Broadway. His journey took a turn when throat issues prevented him from singing, prompting a shift from leading man roles to finding his niche as a character actor, often without his toupee.
Over his extensive career, Toomey appeared in more than 180 films, including iconic titles like *The Big Sleep*, featuring Humphrey Bogart. His television credits include a notable role as a judge in an episode of *The Joseph Cotten Show* and as "Harry" in *The DuPont Show with June Allyson*. He was a familiar face on *Burke's Law* from 1963 to 1966, portraying Sergeant Les Hart. In a memorable cinematic moment, Toomey shared the longest kiss in film history with Jane Wyman in the 1941 film *You're in the Army Now*, lasting an impressive 3 minutes and 5 seconds.
