Biography

Burton Stephen "Burt" Lancaster (November 2, 1913 – October 20, 1994) was a prominent American actor celebrated for his athletic build and charismatic smile, famously referred to as "The Grin." Initially recognized for his tough-guy roles, Lancaster successfully transitioned in the late 1950s, shedding his all-American persona to emerge as one of the most respected actors of his time.

Throughout his illustrious career, Lancaster received four Academy Award nominations, clinching the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in the 1960 film Elmer Gantry. His portrayal in this film also earned him a Golden Globe, while he garnered BAFTA Awards for his roles in The Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) and Atlantic City (1980).

In addition to his acting prowess, Lancaster co-founded the highly influential independent production company, Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, which produced several critically acclaimed films during the 1950s, including Marty (1955), Trapeze (1956), and Sweet Smell of Success (1957). He also ventured into directing with The Kentuckian (1955) and The Midnight Man (1974).

In recognition of his significant contributions to cinema, the American Film Institute honored Lancaster in 1999 by ranking him as the nineteenth greatest male star in film history. His legacy endures, marking him as a transformative figure in the film industry.
