James Whitmore
Biography
James Allen Whitmore Jr. (October 1, 1921 – February 6, 2009) was a distinguished American actor renowned for his contributions to film, theatre, and television. Throughout his illustrious career, Whitmore achieved remarkable recognition, earning three of the coveted EGOT awards: a Tony, a Grammy, and an Emmy. Additionally, he secured a Golden Globe and received two Academy Award nominations.
After serving in World War II, Whitmore made his Broadway debut in the role of a sergeant in "Command Decision." Although he had signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, his part in the film adaptation was ultimately portrayed by Van Johnson. His breakout role for MGM was in "Battleground," a performance that garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. His filmography includes notable works such as "Angels in the Outfield," "The Asphalt Jungle," "Kiss Me, Kate," and "Give 'em Hell, Harry!," the latter earning him another Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Harry S. Truman. In "Tora! Tora! Tora!," he depicted Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey.
In the 1950s, Whitmore appeared in numerous television anthology series and starred in the NBC episode "The Gabe Carswell Story" of "Wagon Train." He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on February 8, 1960, located at 6611 Hollywood Boulevard, commemorating his impactful legacy in the entertainment industry.
