John Qualen
Biography
John Qualen, originally named Johan Mandt Kvalen, was a Canadian-American character actor born on December 8, 1899, in Vancouver, British Columbia. His parents were Norwegian immigrants; his father served as a Lutheran minister and altered the family surname from "Kvalen" to "Qualen." There are variations of the name recorded, including Oleson and Oleson Kvalen. Due to his father's ministerial duties, the family relocated frequently, and John graduated from Elgin High School in 1920 at the age of 20. Although he received a scholarship to Northwestern University after winning an oratory contest, he opted to work instead, starting with the Chautauqua Circuit and eventually making his way to Broadway. His breakout role came as the Swedish janitor in Elmer Rice's play *Street Scene*, which he later reprised in the film adaptation.
Qualen's film career took off with his appearance in John Ford's *Arrowsmith* (1931), leading to a fruitful collaboration with the director over three decades. He played notable roles in classics such as *The Searchers* (1956), *Two Rode Together* (1961), *The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance* (1962), and *Cheyenne Autumn* (1964). With over a hundred films to his credit and a strong television presence into the 1970s, Qualen often showcased his versatility through various accents, primarily Scandinavian. His memorable performances include Muley in *The Grapes of Wrath* (1940) and Berger in *Casablanca* (1942). In his later years, he lost his sight and passed away from heart failure on September 12, 1987, in Torrance, California. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, leaving behind three daughters.
